Glide SDI® | Technology Overview
Glide SDI is an innovative needle-free drug delivery system for the injection of drugs and vaccines in solid doses. Glide SDI is simple, clean and easy to use, even at home, and, by being much less invasive than traditional injection methods, Glide SDI improves the treatment experience of both patients and carers. By allowing the injection of solid formulations, Glide SDI opens up new therapeutic formulation and delivery options for new and existing treatments.
In its simplest form the needle-less Glide technology contains a tiny, pointed rod of pharmaceutical material that is pushed against, pierces and penetrates the skin. The pharmaceutical material comprises the active drug and any required excipients to produce a robust formulation that has the desired release kinetics for the drug. The drug formulation is pushed into the skin using the simple spring powered Glide SDI actuator.
The drug component is a tiny pointed rod that is less than half the size of a grain of rice and the injection process is completed in a fraction of a second. Studies have shown that volunteers prefer to be injected with the Glide technology rather than have an injection with a standard needle and syringe.
The Glide SDI comprises two main components:
- The reusable Glide actuator
- The disposable drug cassette prefilled with the drug
